Jonathan Davies

Bassoon

Bassoonist Jonathan Davies made his BBC Proms debut in 2019 performing Oliver Knussen’s ‘Study for Metamorphosis for solo bassoon’, returning in 2020 to perform Anna Meredith’s virtuosic ‘Axeman’ for solo electric bassoon with the London Sinfonietta. His passion and commitment to performing new solo works for the bassoon continues, with notable highlights including a world premiere for bassoon and choir by David Sawer alongside the BBC Singers, the European premiere of Clarice Assad’s ‘Terra Bassoon Concerto’ with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the release of his recording of Dutilleux’s ‘Sarabande et Cortège’, newly orchestrated by Kenneth Hesketh and accompanied by John Wilson and the Sinfonia of London (BBC Music Magazine Award 2021). Other notable recordings include Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto with the LPO and Vladimir Jurowski (LPO label) and Poulenc’s ‘Trio for Oboe, Bassoon & Piano’ (Resonus Classics).
He was appointed principal bassoon of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2016, having previously held the same position with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Jonathan is currently a professor and associate of the Royal Academy of Music, London.
